Along the Ligurian Coast lies a beautiful stretch of idyllic coves and pebbly beaches set against steep, pine-clad hills dotted with colourful villas. Portofino is the jewel of the Italian Riviera; a cluster of ochre-coloured buildings surround this dramatic natural harbour which brims with yachts and the odd rowing boat. Little has changed since the days when Liz Taylor and Frank Sinatra holidayed here. Gucci, Hermès and Louis Vuitton are all to be found, yet Portofino is not showy; remaining understated in that uniquely elegant, Italian way. Take time to visit the Cinque Terre - Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore are tiny villages which cling to rugged crevices; and this UNESCO World Heritage Site is unreachable by car but popular with yachts. Those who haven’t tasted Ligurian fare are in for a treat
