Vita and Ryan's 470 Campaign - April Update

3rd May 2021 - from Vita and Ryan

Onwards and upwards! Another big push!

After a well needed break after Worlds, we came back out to Vilamoura raring to get back on the training/racing circuit.

More teams have arrived now that COVID restrictions have relaxed so the Mixed fleet is bigger and tougher than ever! We had a taste of this in the Coaches regatta which took place last week. It was a challenging event with tricky sea state and a few wacky shifts! We had 3 days of an onshore breeze (a change from worlds) with light winds the first 2 days and a bit of breeze on the final day. We improved our racing and made fewer mistakes each day, finishing in 3rd place. We took a lot from this wind direction and condition which we will hopefully be able to implement at the Europeans. The first day was fairly eventful as we snapped our spinnaker pole in half on the first hoist! So we sailed the whole of the first race without a pole! (Ryan’s arm was very sore by the end).

We have spent the past couple of weeks focusing on racing and tactics. By joining in with training races every afternoon and debriefing the tactics for the day we are progressing our knowledge of every wind direction/condition ready to take in to the Euros. It was hard in the first week as we had no coach so had to structure our training individually, linking up with outer teams when we could.

This week however we have been focusing on finessing our equipment and preparing our self for the Europeans, which start tomorrow! Race sails have been tested, boat has been polished (several times!) and our minds and bodies are ready for battle!

Upcoming events … (at current)

• Junior Worlds - San Remo, Italy, 11-18 July

• Junior Europeans - Formia, Italy, 24-31 July

• Princess Sophia - Palma, Spain, 2-9 October

We are immensely grateful to everyone who has been supporting us, we have had many encouraging messages that help boost our confidence when it is low. Cecil-Wright have made a platform for us to perform off, without the new boat we wouldn’t be the fastest boat in the fleet! (A couple of foreign coaches came up to us and commented on how speedy we are 😉 )

As always, we would be so grateful if anyone has contacts in any of these venues or knows of anywhere we can stay (the Vilamoura accommodation bill is racking up!). This has greatly helped us in the past.

Any contribution to travel, accommodation, entry costs (etc) will be massively appreciated and will go along way!

If you want to help us out on our journey to Paris 2024 or want to chat, then please give us a call!
